Soft Green Twilight Diptych resulted from a new research into the approach of paintings as objects. The immaculate colour transitions which characterise Donald Schenkel’s oeuvre melt together with wooden beams, inviting viewers to view the works from different angles. Gradients follow the shape of the wooden beam, allowing the light to travel to different parts of the work, resulting in the oil paint to expose different tones of its colour. In these new works, Donald plays with the concept of minimalism. To form his compositions, he makes use of a geometric rectangular shape, while also using natural products like wood and oil paint that are at odds with minimalism.
