Gradient Studies, Composition No.1, is a commissioned work of art consisting of 100 different gradients on ‘tiles’ of 20 by 20 cm, oil paint on paper on Dibond.

Gradient Studies, Composition No.1 later turned out to be the start of the Behaviour of Colours series which culminated into an exhibition in Guangzhou. For the first time I opened all registers to explore new combinations of colours, thereby investigating their behaviour.

Each colour gradient in this installation piece was preluded by a studies that described the different interactions of colours. Sometimes the gradients collided, sometimes they subtly faded and sometimes they presented unexpected ‘volta’ from one tone that transformed into another.
