All things come from blue and return to blue. As the point of departure this series forms the foundation of my artistic practice. I often return to these colour families to touch ground.
Creating subtle gradients with oil paints and seeking for a smoothness in color transitions that can lead the eye into the faraway. Sometimes these blues flash purely from the canvas, at other times they are diluted into darkening twilights.
The book A Fieldguide to Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit helped me to find the words for the visual concepts in my mind. In it she continually refers to blue as the colour of distance. For me, it became the colour of contemplation, the Greek idea of a mindset of wordless wonder. These gradients contain a soothing subtlety that makes them the natural viewpoint for contemplation.
